Characteristics and Differences
Often mistaken for each other, hemp and marijuana are different varieties of the Cannabis sativa L. plant. This is where things can get a little confusing, but we’ll try and break it down for you as simply as possible.
Basically, CBD is an active compound (called a cannabinoid) that is found in mature cannabis plants – in most strains, it is found in abundance throughout the leaves, flowers, and even the stems. This is the compound that is of course responsible for all of the medical and therapeutic benefits that you’ve likely heard about all over the news in recent years. This is to say our CBD Rich oils are cannabis oils that have a significant content of cannabidiol as well as other cannabinoids. It is a whole plant extraction of potent cannabis. It is made from the flowers, leaves and stalks of hemp and not from its seeds like CBD hemp oil. Our CBD Rich oils are generally used for therapeutic purposes to alleviate pain, anxiety, insomnia, epileptic seizures, and many other ailments.
CBD Hemp oils, on the other hand, are 99% of the time made from cannabis seeds, which contain minimum amounts of CBD (or any other cannabinoids, for that matter). It is made from pressing hemp seeds. A food product made from pressed hemp seeds. It’s a highly nutritious food and people like to use it for its taste and reported health benefits. It does not contain any substantial amount of CBD or any active cannabinoids. It is used as a protein supplement for food, as an ingredient in the lotion and soap products because of its remedial properties for hair and skin, etc. You can buy hemp-seed oil online or at certain food stores, where you can learn about more ways to incorporate it into your diet and hygiene.
Thus, when you go online or on Amazon or even to your local dispensary and see all these “hemp” products, just know that even though they contain CBD they very likely come from the seeds of the plant, have gone through a low quality extraction process and contain hardly any active cannabinoids, if at all. What’s kind of confusing, though, is that real, quality CBD oils actually do come from the hemp plant as well – they just come from the mature parts of the plant (stem and leaves), rather than the seeds and go through strict extraction methods.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that hemp and cannabis are NOT two different things – they both come from the same exact species of plant, which is the Cannabis sativa L. plant, but have different levels of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids.
So again, CBD (hemp) oil is a food and CBD Rich oil is more of a medicine. In order to get a true, quality CBD Rich oil you’ll have to either get a medical marijuana card and buy from a dispensary, or you can legally order online from any number of quality manufacturers.

Why Are Our Full Spectrum CBD Oils & CO2 Oils So Expensive?
One of the most frequent questions we get asked about our CBD oils is why they are so expensive, and this question usually comes from people who see hemp “seed” oil in supermarkets or Amazon at very low prices and do not understand the difference. The short answer is because CBD oil is not exactly the same as hemp seed oil, and also because the extraction techniques used for producing the cannabinoid-rich products are different from those used for obtaining oil from hemp seeds.
Hemp seed oil is produced by cold pressing the seeds and then extracting the oil, and this procedure is easy to implement at home and requires no special equipment or solvent. However, note that this product, although of great nutritional value, is different from the ones we produce,

Super Critical CO2 extraction
A more expensive but non-toxic and extremely efficient method to obtain CBD oil is CO2 extraction. This requires complex equipment and expertise, but uses safe solvents and ensures a highly potent and pure extract. The CBD oils obtained through super critical extraction is a full spectrum cannabinoid-rich product, with numerous health benefits. The oil is transparent.
That is to say Super Critical CO2 extraction is a safe, sustainable and superior method. Using state of the art equipment we take harmless Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and compress it to upwards of 10,000 psi (300 times greater than car tire pressure).
At these extremes CO2 becomes ‘super critical’ where it possesses the properties of both a liquid and a gas at the same time. It is also very cold so it does not harm any heat-sensitive nutrients like enzymes or vitamins.
This super critical fluid is an exceptional non-toxic solvent. When added to our nutrient rich it fully liberates the entire treasure of phytonutrients hidden within. The CO2 is then released and recycled leaving a highly concentrated, totally pure extract that is more easily digested and assimilated.
Ethanol Cannabis Extraction Process
For our Rick Simpson Oil mostly used in treating cancer, extreme pain, etc, we use Ethanol Cannabis Extraction – Food Grade Alcohol. Ethanol is used for extracting the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant, and have the advantage of being safe for consumption as well.
The Difference in Product between Ethanol Cannabis Extraction and CO2 Extraction
The most important difference here is that the ethanol cannabis extraction retains the chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is very important in that it oxygenates the body creating an alkaline environment. Cancer and other diseases cannot survive in an alkaline environment. It also retains the Terpenes (essential oils) which are the essence of the plant and one of the main healing factors. Along with that it preserves all the flavonoids – the phytochemicals of the plant and of course the compounds or cannabinoids. Alcohol extraction is a very gentle way of extracting the cannabinoids and has been the go to for herbalists for centuries.
Naturaly occurring plant cannabinoids (Phytocannabinoids)
The most known phytocannabinoids are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), but the cannabis plant also includes CBG (cannabigerol), CBD (cannabichromene), THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin), CBE (cannabielsoin), CBT (cannabicitran) and CBL (cannabicyclol). These are the most important cannabinoids found in Cannabis sativa, the plant containing a total of 66 such chemicals.
THC is the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant and exerts its effects by binding to the CB1 receptor in the brain. The cannabis plant contains around 25% of D9 THC and a low concentration of D8 THC, so the substance that gets people high is D9 THC.
Still, this compound also has positive health effects. Studies showing that tetrahydrocannabinol has analgesic and neuroprotective properties. It also seems to be a natural anti-inflammatory agent, able to reduce neuroinflammation and to stimulate the birth of new neurons.
CBD counteracts the psychoactivity of THC and is the most beneficial compound extracted from the cannabis plant, having strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and being an excellent neuroprotector, antidepressant and anxiolytic agent. It’s also been suggested to alleviate symptoms of schizophrenia.
CBN results from the degradation of THC and is found in lower amounts in the cannabis plant. It has a higher affinity to the CB2 receptor so it’s not as psychoactive as THC. Cannabinoids exert their effects inside the body by interacting with specific receptors found in the central nervous system, immune system and so on, but the psychoactive effects are the result of cannabinoids interacting with CB1 and CB2.
CBG, another phytocannabinoid, binds to the CB2 receptor but is non-psychotomimetic, so it doesn’t make one high. It’s found in higher concentrations in hemp strains, and assists in the regulation of serotonin, adrenaline and noradrenaline release. By inhibiting the uptake of GABA in the brain, CBG decreases anxiety and muscle tension is a similar manner to CBD.
Finally, CBC or cannabichromene is also a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, found mostly in tropical cannabis varieties, but in very low levels (less than 1%). It has been suggested to have strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and to enhance the pain-relieving effects of THC.
WHAT ARE TERPENES AND WHAT IS THEIR ROLE?
You’re probably familiar with solvents and cannabinoids at this point, but what about terpenes? What are these compounds and how do they influence the properties of hemp in general, and of hemp oil in particular?
Terpenes give the aroma, flavor and color of plants
Terpenes are organic compounds found in a variety of plants, and contribute to their flavor, scent and color. These substances are the building blocks for essential oils and plant raisins, and are often used in food additives, perfumery and aromatherapy. Some are even thought to have medicinal properties, and to help in fighting bacteria, fungus and environmental stress.
Plants like rosemary, mint or basil have a strong terpene profile, and this is why they’re referred to as aromatic plants. Cannabis at its turn contains a wide range of terpenes (over 200) that are thought to interact synergistically with the cannabinoids in the plant, and to enhance its health effects.
BCP (beta-caryophyllene) for example is a terpene found in the cannabis plant that is known to activate the CB2 receptor in the endocannabinoid system and to exert anti-inflammatory effects. It’s non-psychoactive, and is the first FDA approved dietary cannabinoid, being used as food additive.
Vitamin A is also a terpene, although we don’t generally think of it this way. Conifers produce large amounts of these compounds, and most plants produce higher quantities of terpenes in the warmer seasons.
Each of the different cannabis strains contains its own terpenes, and some are more abundant, hence the different flavors and aromas. Alpha-pinene for example is one of the most known terpenes in cannabis and is also found in sage and rosemary. It is known to act as a natural bronchodilator and expectorant and to help one focus better. It increases the mental energy and can even act as a topical antiseptic.
Limonene, another terpenes found in the cannabis strains, is also present in citrus fruits, juniper and peppermint, and has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-depressant effects. Moreover, it is suggested that this compound exerts anti-carcinogen properties, and is known to increase blood pressure.
Myrcene is found in menthol, lemon grass and most varieties of marijuana, and is widely used in the perfumery industry. Just like the previously mentioned compounds, it has anti-microbial and anti-septic properties, and acts as a natural anti-depressant, anti-carcinogen and anti-inflammatory agent. It’s a relaxing substance and in marijuana-derived products, it increases the cell membrane permeability, allowing for higher amounts of THC to travel to the brain cells.
Isolates, Distillates, and Full Spectrum Extract: Why Whole Plant Therapy Is The Secret Miracle Worker
When it comes to buying cannabis extracts, such as CBD and CBG oils, there are lots of options and lots of unfamiliar words describing them. It’s no wonder that people get confused! With so many choices, which is the best choice?
“Full Spectrum” is another way to say “whole plant extract”, which means that the natural compounds in the plant have been kept intact throughout the extraction process and thereby work together to give you, the customer, maximum therapeutic results. Compare this to isolates and distillates, in which all compounds are removed other than the target compound.
Isolates take it further by refining the extract so much that there is nothing present but the target cannabinoid, in pure powder form. For example, a CBD isolate would contain nothing but molecularly pure CBD.
But don’t be fooled! When it comes to cannabis extracts, pure does not necessarilly means better — in fact, research has suggested that the opposite is actually true. Isolating a cannabinoid from all the other compounds that are naturally present in cannabis takes away a lot of the plant’s medicinal benefits. This is because trace amounts of other cannabinoids, such as THC, CBN, CBG, CBC, etc., and the naturally occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and chlorophyll actually work together with the target cannabinoid in what is known as the “entourage effect”. This means that these compounds increase each others’ healing properties when they are together.
Cannabis is such a miracle plant because of its natural combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, and chlorophyll. Isolates and distillates are useful for people who want to avoid all traces of a certain compound, such as THC, but otherwise, full spectrum is definitely the way to go. When buying cannabis extracts, you want to get the most bang for your buck: full spectrum, whole plant therapy will give you exactly that.
However there are still viable uses for an isolate worth mentioning:
• An isolate is a great option if you think of it as an additive. These crystals can be added to edibles, into topicals, bath bombs, mixed with marijuana and more.

• Isolate is low cost, making it the only choice for some users on a tight budget.
